Program Mission

Supporting high-quality journalism projects focused on public policy issues affecting the Great Lakes region.

The Joyce Foundation invests in independent, nonpartisan reporting to illuminate the most important issues shaping the future of the Great Lakes region, and to inform fact-based policies and other measures needed to solve them. A strong and inclusive news and information system is a pillar of democracy, smart decision-making, accountability for our leadership, and cohesion in our communities.

Strategy

The Journalism program’s grantmaking supports:

  • Local, state, and national reporting projects and positions focused on covering issues that inform fact-based policymaking related to the Foundation’s primary program strategies:
  • Projects that prepare and assist early-career journalists, particularly journalists of color, to assure that journalism and newsrooms reflect the full diversity of our communities
  • Strengthening the health and sustainability of the nonprofit news sector in the Great Lakes region.
  • Initiatives to strengthen local news, including trusted messengers who have earned credibility and loyalty within their communities
